'Vivienne Westwood 1548' is part of an ongoing series of works that juxtapose portraits of women from art with images of modern day couture as a way of questioning the external forces that exist within both art and fashion which shape and enforce our understanding of the ideals around women’s status in society.
This work in one in a new series that takes the idea of the female nude in art and reimagines her dressed. Here Bronzino's depiction of Venus from his 1548 work Venus, Cupid and Jealousy is now seen in this glorious Vivienne Westwood dress from 2016. What I love about this dress and why I think it is perfect for Venus is that it seems to be holding two fingers up at the sometimes seemingly endless reductions of women to a body. Its like if thats all you want here you go. All the while knowing that of course there is and always was so much more to a woman or indeed anyones identity beyond how they look.
