I love how the shape of the ruff works with the shape of the skirt in this extraordinary outfit from 1997 by Thierry Mugler. Made of rubber and leather the 'tyre dress' uses more traditionally, male imagery of the car but manipulates them into an exaggerated female form. It's a strange symbiosis that somehow works albeit in a very theatrical manner. I'm not exactly sure it would be the most comfortable outfit to wear but I suspect thats not the point... I think it's more about the impact of both wearing it and being seen as the person who is wearing it. Clothing as a powerful indicator of confidence, status and power. A lot like the ornate ruff in this portrait of Judith Langley painted by the Dutch artist Jan van Ravesteyn in 1631.
