This rather grave looking woman is taken from Bronzino's 1540 painting 'A Young Woman and her little Boy'. The woman is thought to have been a member of the Medici court in Florence, Italy. So I have paired her with this lovely gold jacquard Gucci dress; the fabric with its repeating pattern seems very reminiscent of those handwoven silk brocades of the renaissance that only someone like the woman here, from the noble classes, were permitted to wear. And given the designer price tag of the Gucci dress perhaps if she was alive today perhaps she would have. I really like how the simple cut of the dress seems to suit the seriousness of her expression
'Gucci 1540' is part of an ongoing series of works that juxtapose portraits of women from art with images of modern day couture as a way of questioning the external forces that exist within both art and fashion which shape and enforce our understanding of the ideals around women’s status in society.
