This is one of my earliest collages and one of my favourites. Aside from rules about what colours and fabrics the Renaissance social classes were allowed to wear there were also very strict rules on the modesty of clothing (especially for women) and how much flesh they were allowed (or not) to show. I imagine any woman seen in this little Gucci swimsuit from 2021 would have been immediately imprisoned or perhaps even burnt at the stake. I've paired it with this beautiful portrait of a young woman painted in 1460 by the Dutch artist Rogier van der Weyden. I really like the juxtaposition of her rather reserved and demure look and the more liberating feel of the swimsuit.
